Place-based STEAM learning
Recording: 5 Minute Lightning Talk
Recording: Part 1 - Virtual Field Trips in Math, STEM, and STEAM
Recording: Part 2 - Create Your Own Virtual Fieldtrips in Math, STEM, and STEAM

The #STEMlens and Create Your Own walkSTEM programs created by talkSTEM engage middle school girls through the use of virtual field trips and by inviting girls to join the community of walkSTEM by sharing their unique STEM mindsets through photographs and videos created by them.  Students can generate STEAM-integrated questions in their own places (home, parks, school campus, neighborhood, etc) to create unique content that is then shared.  In this way, students' funds of knowledge is validated and STEAM mindsets are nurtured and expanded.

GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science) Summer 2020  - Virtual Research Camp and STEAM Activity Kits
Recording: 5 Minute Lightning Talk
Recording: 30 Minute Full Presentation with All Program Details

GEMS is an all-girls STEAM and Programming summer camp, focusing on educating young girls from Title I schools about the fields of STEAM, and the careers in each field. Due to COVID-19, GEMS was unable to host in-person summer camps. This led to the innovative creation of the GEMS Virtual Research Camp (VRC) where students conducted college level scientific research projects on topics such as robotic surgeries and special needs students competing in robotics competitions. GEMS also implemented the GEMS STEAM Activity Kit which was created for our younger miniGEMS campers that included all materials for safe at-home experiments.  Although GEMS did not host in person summer camps, community outreach continued and thrived.

Camp Out of the Box
Recording: 5 Minute Lightning Talk

During this Lightening Talk, you will hear about how the Girl Scouts swiftly transitioned from in-person camp to virtual online summer camps where girls learned STEM and met kids from other troops across the nation. Not everyone had the resources to learn STEM online so Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas wanted to give all girls an equal opportunity to learn STEM regardless of their access to technology.  Hear about how the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas delivered “Camp Out of the Box” to girls’ homes each week. The boxes included detailed activity guides to help girls complete the activities on their own, or with a little help from a parent or older sibling. Tips and tricks from hosting virtual camps will be shared.

Partner with Industry Volunteers to Transform Computer Science Instruction
Recording: 5 Minute Lightning Talk

There is an increasing demand for computer science courses, yet a shortage of teachers with subject matter expertise. TEALS helps develop high school teachers by partnering them with industry volunteers. Teachers learn computer science skills while team-teaching with the volunteers who have computer science content expertise. In this session, learn more about the TEALS approach and how to become a part of the program.

Topics discussed include the application process, curriculum offerings, and diversity and inclusion efforts. Additionally, learn about the volunteer recruitment and placement process, volunteer training, and ongoing classroom support.
