Effective STEM Messaging to Engage All Kids in STEM
Workshops, Presentations, Keynotes
To change the demographics of engineers and scientists - to increase the diversity of those pursing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields - the conversation must change.
Explore research-based effective practices and effective messaging, marketing, and media that engage girls (and all learners) in STEM and excite them about STEM pathways. Learn how “create” is more effective than “build,” why images that include people and not just gadgets are important to engage all in STEM, and words and phrases that increase STEM interest. Walk away with resources, research, and practical applications for the classroom, public communications, and beyond.
The Effective STEM Messaging workshop, presentation, or keynote can be customized based on audience, format, and length of time. From a 15-minute keynote or lightning talk to a 30-minute presentation to an up to 3-hour interactive workshop, content can include the following:
Explore basic research findings from the Messages Matter report from Discover Engineering, Changing the Conversation: Messages for Improving Public Understanding of Engineering report from the National Academy of Engineering, and other related messaging and imagery research.
Learn the words and phrases that engage a more diverse population of students to consider STEM careers.
Learn basic recommendations on engaging girls in STEM pursuits and encourage girls to consider STEM careers from the American Association of University Women (AAUW)’s Why So Few: Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math report.
Explore five strategies for engaging kids in STEM that will help kids gain the experiences and confidence to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
