From Legos to Leadership: Empowering Females through Robotics
EER 0.706
An interactive session to introduce attendees to the method that a group of female high school students used to develop and maintain a sustainable pipeline of girls in STEM through participation in robotics. Through our efforts, our First Robotics program has experienced a 700% increase in female participation over the past 12 years and now has achieved 50% female leadership. Our efforts focus on increasing awareness, inclusion, exposure, and confidence by hosting events annually, engaging girls K-12.

Strategies for Engaging Underrepresented Girls in STEM
EER 3.646
Only 15% of black students and 17% of Hispanic students took advanced math and science high school courses. If we do not understand "underrepresented populations" in STEM as a whole, then how can we effectively engage underrepresented girls in formal and informal STEM learning environments? This session will challenge organizations and educators to go beyond the traditional "project-based learning" approach to explore more holistic models that address the unique set of individual, family and community risk factors facing underrepresented girls. Participants will work in groups to brainstorm and develop practical strategies and frameworks for STEM learning, rooted in research-based, best practices. Let's really change the equation!
