Million Women Mentors – Texas 2019 Stand Up for STEM Awards Announced

Austin, Texas: The Texas Girls Collaborative Project (TxGCP), which connects and supports Texas-based organizations that empower women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), presented its Million Women Mentors® - Texas (MWM-TX) Stand Up for STEM Awards at the 2019 Texas Women & Girls in STEM Summit. The Stand Up for STEM Awards recognize and elevate the work of incredible individuals and organizations in Texas advancing women and girls in STEM.

The TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM Corporate Award recognizes a company engaged in mentoring women and/or girls in STEM. Awardees must demonstrate a commitment to mentoring women and girls, increasing the diversity of those pursuing STEM careers, and retaining women who enter the STEM workforce. The 2019 TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM Corporate Award is presented to Samsung Austin Semiconductor. (Learn more about the recipient.)

The TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM Mentor Award recognizes a STEM Professional engaged in mentoring women and/or girls in STEM. Awardees must demonstrate a passion for encouraging girls and women to pursue a STEM career, develop others via formal and informal mentoring relationships, and inspire others as a role model by showing what it takes to succeed in their chosen profession. The 2019 TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM Mentor Award is presented to Mansoureh Tehrani with TriReach Collaborative. (Learn more about the recipient.)

The TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM Educational Organization Award recognizes K-12 schools, preK schools or non-profits, educational non-profits and similar organizations that demonstrate a commitment to engaging STEM mentors and role models in programs encouraging women and girls to pursue STEM careers, increasing the diversity of those pursuing STEM careers, and retaining women and girls who enter the STEM education pipeline The 2019 TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM Educational Organization Award is presented to Girlstart. The TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM Educator Award recognizes individual educators or educational teams from K-12 schools, preK schools or non-profits, educational non-profits and similar organizations that demonstrate a commitment to engaging STEM mentors and role models in programs encouraging women and girls to pursue STEM careers, increasing the diversity of those pursuing STEM careers, and retaining women and girls who enter the STEM education pipeline. The 2019 TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM Educator Award is presented to Barbara Hewitt from Texas State University. (Learn more about the recipient.)

The TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM Collegiate Award recognizes current students or registered student organizations of an institution of higher learning or military training program. Awardees must demonstrate a passion for encouraging girls and women to pursue a STEM career, embrace available STEM activities and demonstrates leadership in these activities, and inspire others by showing enthusiasm and commitment to pursuing a STEM career. The 2019 TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM Collegiate Award is presented to Women Mentoring Women in Engineering at The University of Texas at Dallas. (Learn more about the recipient.)

The TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM High School Award recognizes a STEM High School Student or Student Group/Organization engaged in mentoring women and/or girls in STEM. Awardees must demonstrate a passion for encouraging girls and women to pursue a STEM career, embrace available STEM activities and demonstrates leadership in these activities, and inspire others by showing enthusiasm and commitment to pursuing a STEM career. The 2019 TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM High School Award is presented to Vandegrift High School’s Viperbots Hydra. Vandegrift High School is in Leander Independent School District. The TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM High School Award recognizes a STEM High School Student or Student Group/Organization engaged in mentoring women and/or girls in STEM. Awardees must demonstrate a passion for encouraging girls and women to pursue a STEM career, embrace available STEM activities and demonstrates leadership in these activities, and inspire others by showing enthusiasm and commitment to pursuing a STEM career. The 2019 TxGCP MWM-TX Stand Up for STEM High School Award is presented to Gouzia Sivarajah from Heritage High School in Frisco ISD. (Learn more about the recipient.)

The awards were presented at the third annual Texas Women and Girls in STEM Summit hosted by the Texas Girls Collaborative Project at The University of Texas at Austin campus. TxGCP is part of the National Girls Collaborative Project and led by the Women in Engineering Program at The University of Texas at Austin and statewide leadership teams and a champions board.
